Dyson DC28 Animal Ratings

86.6  While the average of the consumer ratings for the DC28 Animal is quite high, when reviewing the ratings themselves there were few 3 or 4 star ratings (out of 5).   Most ratings are 1, 2 or 5.   This indicates that people either love this vacuum cleaner or hate it (and given that the overall score is 86.6 it appears a larger portion of consumers love it).  This is an expensive vacuum but it has very strong suction, is good on carpet and bare floors, and is effective at pet hair removal.  It is, however, fairly heavy.

The Dyson DC28 Animal comes with “Airmuscle technology”, a system that uses a pneumatic actuator to help create a tighter bond between the vacuum’s head and the floor.  This helps increase suction.  It also uses a powered cam and a high torque clutch to adjust the brushbar for optimal cleaning.  This is considered Dyson’s most advanced cleaner head technology.  Most consumer comments indicate that the DC28 has very strong suction.

It is designed for multi-surface cleaning and comes with a motorized brushbar that can be turned on and off.  The vacuum uses Root Cyclone technology which does not lose suction over time, and is also bagless (like all Dysons).

HEPA filtration is standard and the vacuum is certified Asthma and Allergy Friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.  The HEPA filter is also a lifetime washable filter.   Several tools are included with the DC28 Animal - a mini turbine head (pet hair tool), flat out head (helpful for getting under furniture), and a combination crevice tool and brush tool

Other Dyson DC28 Animal features include a 35 foot power cord (quite long), a quick-draw telescopic reach wand and a 13.5 inch wide cleaning path (only average width).   The DC28 weighs in at 20.6 lbs and this has caused some complaints from consumers who feel it is hard to maneuver.  It carries the usual Dyson 5 year warranty.

I could stop there, but the beauty is in the details, and the DC28 provides countless examples that never cease to amaze me. When I first bought this vacuum a month ago - where I purchased it new from Bed, Bath and Beyond for $434 after a $50 Best Buy price match and a 20% coupon (lowest you'll find it anywhere, and they offer an automatic, free lifetime warranty) - I took it home and examined every inch and how it was made. I was very impressed to find the air pathway totally rubber sealed so that suction isn't lost. In addition to that, I also noticed how the attachments fit so well into place, clicking in and out with ease but not so much they would fall out and become lost. Another thing I noticed in the store which caught my eye was part of the Air Muscle technology that keeps the head flat on the floor no matter the angle of sweeping and the adjustments - via button - to raise, lower and stop the brush. After sweeping our main walking path in our condo, it was sickening to see what came up. I know this is a cliche phrase, but with the Dyson, it's so easy. I just realized today after a three-hour whole-house sweeping session that detaching the extension wand and using the attachments directly at the end of the flexible hose is a big improvement on close up, torso-level objects. I swept up dog hair off of our cloth rocking chair with ease using the included power brush attachment. So far, I'm just uber impressed with the quality and function of the entire package. From the small details such as how the attachments connect and easy canister emptying to the brush height adjustments, the DC28 delivers. The only downside is like other reviewers confirm, the vacuum is a little heavier at around 20 pounds. We have deeper pile, so on the "deep pile" setting it's very maneuverable and dare I... Reply
