94.7  The Dyson DC41 Animal is Dyson’s latest upright.  It is getting consumer ratings in the “excellent” range and owners seem very pleased with the machines powerful suction, automatic nozzle height control, long power cord and ability to pick up pet hair.  It is, however, rather expensive.

Ratings for the upright are excellent as can be seen in the table below. Not every source of ratings believes the vacuum is “excellent” but averaging the figures below generates a score of 94.7 which is top notch, and all sources give it a good or an excellent rating.

The DC41 uses ball technology which means the vacuum rests on a ball that provides simple yet precise movement of the vacuum at the flick of a wrist.  Some consumers really like the ball technology but it should be said that some do not.   Dyson highlights that the ball will not scratch delicate hard floors.

The DC41 is powered by a 12 amp motor (that sits inside the ball) and suction is produced by Dyson’s radial root cyclone technology.  The technology is famous for generating continuous powerful suction even as the dust canister fills. The vacuum also has a self-adjusting cleaner head that automatically moves up or down optimizing the distance between the cleaner head and the floor.  This approach ensures strong suction and that the brushbar is at an optimal distance from the surface to be cleaned.

A review of the many owner comments shows key consumer insights:

PROS
- Great on pet hair
- Strong suction
- Easy to empty dirt canister
- Automatic height adjustment feature works well
- Easy to maneuver and to carry
- Tools work well
- Long power cord

CONS
- Expensive
- Lots of plastic in construction
- Sometimes hard to get under furniture

The DC41 animal is made for households with pets and it includes a mini turbine head that attaches to the end of the hose/wand and excels at removing pet hair from carpet or upholstery.  The turbine head is also handy for cleaning stairs.  Other tools that are provided with the DC41 include a stair tool and a combination crevice/brush tool.  In addition, there is also a built-in telescopic wand.

The vacuum weighs just over 17lbs so it is not a lightweight machine but 17lbs is not too heavy either.  Like most full size Dysons it comes with HEPA filtration, a feature for removing small particles such as ragweed, pollen, dust mites, mold and bacteria from the air.  HEPA filtration is very popular with asthma and allergy sufferers.  The HEPA filter is washable and made to last the lifetime of the vacuum (other vacuum filters on the DC41 are also lifetime washable).

The DC41 Animal is effective on both carpets and bare floors and it uses a motorized brushbar.  The brushbar has on/off controls that allow one to turn the spinning bar off when vacuuming bare surfaces and turn it on when cleaning carpets.  Cleaning reach on the DC41 is quite good as there is a telescopic wand, a fairly lengthy hose and a 35 foot power cord.

This is a bagless vacuum cleaner and the dirt canister has a volume of 0.55 gallons (much larger than the DC25 but a little smaller than the DC28 for example).  The canister is bottom empty and the bottom door flips open to release the debris at the push of a button.  Most owners agree that it is easy-to-empty.  The cleaning path on this upright is 13.5 inches which is quite wide so each pass of the vacuum covers a large area.   The DC41 carries a 5-year parts and labor warranty.
