About the Scoring

vacuum ratingsIf you are considering a purchase and believe in the value of consumer product input and ratings (like we do) then you may wish to better understand the scoring system we apply here at Vacuum-Cleaner-Ratings.

Each vacuum receives consumer ratings from several different sources and in most cases the number of ratings from each source is different.  We apply a weighted score to ensure that the rating from each source is neither given too much emphasis nor too little emphasis.  Let’s look at an example:

Consumer ratings for the Bagless Wonder by HooverLux:

Source # Vacuum Cleaner Ratings Avg Rating (1 to 5)
Amazon 100 4
Walmart 20 3

In this case we could say Amazon gives 4/5 and Walmart 3/5 so the score for this vacuum is 3.5/5 or 70.  But this wouldn’t really be a good representation of how the 120 consumers felt (the majority gave it 4/5 or 80).

====> So we use a weighted average such that every consumer rating (regardless of it’s source) is given the same emphasis:

Amazon = (100/120 x (4/5)) = 0.67
Walmart = (20/120 x (3/5)) = 0.10

Therefore the score is 0.67 + 0.10 = 0.77 = 77
